    Molluscs

    Who are they?

    The molluscs are a highly diverse, ancient group of soft-bodied invertebrates. Major groups include gastropods, bivalves, cephalopods and chitons.

    Characteristics

    • Soft bodied

    • A thin membrane (mantle) encases major organs

    • Mantle secretes shell (if present)

    • Specialised tongue called a radula

    • Haemocyanin-based blood

    • Breathing usually by gills

    • No paired jointed appendages
