    Bony Fish

    Who are they?

    Bony Fish (Osteichthyes) are the largest and most diverse group of vertebrates. The first bony fish evolved about 410 million years ago from ancient fish groups but the explosion of coral reef fish species happened about 50 million years ago.

    Characteristics

    • Internal bony skeleton

    • Teeth developed

    • Unique pattern of bones in shoulder

    • Articulated, overlapping scales

    • Swim bladder present (in most species)
